Power Experiment Using Cat Comm Adapter III

Nige and I have been discussing the possibility of providing the CA3 with its own power source to speed up the reconnection process to the ECM. Here are some insights:

Power Consumption: The CA3 draws between 140-170mA at 14V, regardless of whether it's connected to the ECM.

Connection Speed: Will the CA3 reconnect faster if it maintains power? It varies. Power cycling and disconnecting the ECM from the CA3 can restore the connection more quickly. Even when the ECM is disconnected via a software switch in the ET, it still takes some time to reconnect.

Battery Considerations: A standard 9V battery has a capacity of about 500mAh, and using two in series gives you 1000mAh. Given the 12V requirement for the Cat Comm Adapter 3, I would expect a runtime of around 2-3 hours, assuming the battery can handle the inrush current, which I can't measure at the moment.

Creating a makeshift battery pack will require some 15-pin D-Sub connectors and some soldering, so I’ll give that a try when I have the time. This setup could be useful in specific situations.

1999 Dodge/Cummins Nexiq Issue

I currently use Cat, Detroit and Volvo laptops for work and a Cummins system in my truck and rely on the Nexiq data connection for everything. It works great!

I recently purchased a Nexiq 3 for my 1999 Dodge/Cummins. I noticed that the 1999 harness uses a 3 pin triangle connector and the 2001 harness uses a standard 3 pin connector. Both are located near the ECM. However, the Nexiq adapter only comes with the triangle 3 pin connector and not the standard 3 pin.

I tried to access the ECM on my 1999 model yesterday and it would not work and I got a communication code error regarding the check engine light. I was able to fix the error on another device.

FYI: I'm connecting a 1999 datalink to a Quadzilla and I noticed that the triangular 3-pin connector only has 2 wires.

What am I doing wrong? Why isn't it working as expected? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Error 106 When Trying to Update CIC

Hi, I’m trying to update my CIC to version C1A, but I keep encountering Error 106. Here’s what I’ve attempted so far:

- Imported SP data using the BMW coding tool (selected SP source -> Update SP data -> WINKFP update).
- Verified that the update file is located in the Ediabas\ecu folder – everything looks good there.

I’m trying to update using both ICOM Next and ICOM B, with connections via OBD and MOST ports. On the ICOM B, both the SYSTEM and MOST LEDs are green.

I used Easy Connect with the following settings:
- Type: REMOTE
- IP:The ICOM IP is shown in Itoolradar
- Mode: MOST_ASYNC

I selected the ICOM Next BMW lock and clicked check, but no errors were displayed during the process.

I’m unsure why this error keeps occurring. Thanks in advance for any help!

EDIT: I managed to resolve the error. It turned out that the ULF module wasn’t functioning correctly, which caused a false MOST ring break. After disconnecting it and bridging with the MOST loop, I was able to proceed with the update.

If anyone has better solutions, please email sales@obd2tool.com.

Why does my odometer show the wrong mileage?

In today's technologically advanced world, automotive technology has evolved significantly. One crucial component of any vehicle is the odometer, which accurately displays the mileage traveled. However, there are instances where the odometer may show incorrect or inaccurate readings. This article aims to explore the reasons behind this issue and shed light on the OBD2 Odometer Correction Tool, a valuable device for rectifying such discrepancies.

1. Mechanical Faults:
One potential cause for incorrect mileage readings on an odometer is mechanical faults. These faults can include broken gears, worn-out cables, or damaged parts within the odometer mechanism. Any damage to these components can lead to the inaccurate display of mileage. In such cases, the OBD2 Odometer Correction Tool can prove to be a useful solution.

2. Tampering and Fraud:

How to Use Diagnostic Tools to Fix Steering Wheel Noises When Turning

Steering wheel noises can be frustrating and concerning, but diagnosing and fixing them doesn't have to be a daunting task. With the help of diagnostic tools, you can effectively identify the root cause of steering wheel noises when turning and take appropriate measures to rectify the issue. In this blog post, we will guide you through the process of using diagnostic tools to troubleshoot and solve steering wheel noises, ensuring a smooth and safe driving experience.

1. Understanding Steering Wheel Noises:
Before diving into the diagnostic process, it's essential to familiarize yourself with various steering wheel noises that commonly occur when turning. These may include squealing, grinding, clicking, or whining sounds. Each noise can indicate a specific underlying problem, such as worn-out components, loose connections, or fluid leaks. By recognizing these noises, you can narrow down the potential causes and streamline your diagnostic approach.

2. Choosing the Right Diagnostic Tool:
To effectively diagnose steering wheel noises, you'll need a reliable diagnostic tool. Several options are available, but three popular choices are the iCOM Next, Tech 2 Clone, and Ford VCM2. These tools are widely used by professionals and provide comprehensive diagnostic capabilities for steering-related issues. While they may vary in terms of features and compatibility, all three are valuable assets when it comes to resolving steering wheel noise problems.

3. Connecting the Diagnostic Tool:
Once you have selected the appropriate diagnostic tool for your vehicle, it's time to connect it to the car's onboard diagnostic (OBD) port. Locate the OBD port, usually found under the dashboard or near the steering column, and connect the diagnostic tool's cable securely. Ensure that the vehicle's ignition is turned on, allowing the tool to establish a connection with the car's computer system.

4. Running Diagnostics and Gathering Data:
After establishing a connection, navigate through the diagnostic tool's interface to access the relevant steering wheel diagnostics. These tools typically provide a range of diagnostic options, including live data, fault code reading, and system tests. Utilize these features to gather accurate data about the steering system, such as sensor readings, pressure levels, and any recorded error codes. This information will serve as a foundation for identifying the root cause of the steering wheel noise.

5. Analyzing and Troubleshooting:
With the collected data in hand, it's time to analyze and interpret the findings. Look for any abnormal readings, error codes, or discrepancies that might explain the steering wheel noise. Cross-reference the data with manufacturer guidelines, service bulletins, or online resources to pinpoint potential causes and solutions. Factors like worn-out ball joints, damaged power steering components, or loose connections could be underlying issues that need attention.

6. Taking Corrective Measures:
